In a blog post, Nash, the general manager at Microsoft said
..since we began development of the next version of the Windows client operating system we have been referring to it by a codename, "Windows 7." But now is a good time to announce that we’ve decided to officially call the next version of Windows, "Windows 7."
In the past there were few cases when Microsoft used code name of a product for the final release, but this is the first time for Windows. Nash also gave the explanation why Windows 7 makes sense
this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore "Windows 7" just makes sense
Copies of Windows 7 software will be distributed to developers and other Microsoft professionals attending the events Professional Developers Conference and DevConnections later this year.
