The First Annular Solar Eclipse of 2009 on January 26th
The first solar eclipse of 2009 occurs on January 26th 2009. This eclipse is termed as annular eclipse as it forms a ring shape. The annular eclipse will be visible from a wide track that traverses the Indian Ocean and western Indonesia. A partial eclipse will be seen within the much larger path of the Moon’s shadow, which includes the southern third of Africa, Madagascar, Australia except Tasmania, southeast India, Southeast Asia and Indonesia.
This is the 50th eclipse of Saros 131. The Saros cycle is an eclipse cycle with a period of about 18 years 11 days 8 hours (approximately 6585⅓ days) that can be used to predict eclipses of the Sun and Moon. The first annular eclipse of Saros 131 occurred on 1720 Aug 04. This eclipse will be visible from Bangalore, Calcutta and Chennai in India and many other Southeast Asian countries and will last for almost 1.30 hours.
Apart from this, there would be 4 lunar eclipses and a total solar eclipse in 2009 and the details are given in the table below.

The eclipse will be visible from Bangalore between 2.33 pm and 03:17 pm, Calcutta between 3:01 pm and 03:30 pm and Chennai between 2:29 pm and 3:19 pm. The eclipse will be at its peak between 3.17 pm and 3.30 pm in India.

Syed, unfortunately none of the eclipse in 2009 happens completely in middle east except one on decemeber 31st 2009 which will be visible primarily from the eastern hemisphere. Apart from this, there are two more eclipse which will be partially visible in middle east which are on August 6th 2009 and February 9th 2009.
All these are lunar eclipse.

Regarding the effects on pregnant ladies when exposed to eclipse,I would say it purely depends on the induviduals thoughts and belief. I could see this question in two different angles.Lets analyse it now.
In India,it was considered that there were many great Rishis and saints who, with their mental powers have observed the ill effects of both eclipses on pregnant ladies and so barred exposure to the rays during that time.This is not superstitious.But if you ask me whether we can believe this information, I would not directly say “yes” as this is not a proven fact and we dont have any evidence for the same.For that matter,we dont even know if Rishis lived in those days.
Secondly, I would see the same question scientifically.In Mexico, it was believed that exposing the pregnant lady to an eclipse caused cleft-lip. That myth has been scientifically disproved in Mexico. You can find those evidences over the net.
I am also quoting from another article
‘There are many old wives’ tales, which attribute birth defects to various causes. Birth defects are NOT caused by eclipses, sewing during pregnancy, riding in autorickshaws, sleeping in any particular position or eating some foods’.
Also this was published in one of the artilces in “The Hindu” dated 18/02/2006. Here is the link for you.
Now I am leaving it to the reader to take a decision.
