You can throw just about everything at VLC and it will chew it up and spit it out. The only thing missing is a upnp server option to work with my ps3. And am betting somebody on the open source scene is working on that right now.

“adjusting the audio/video sync” – I was never aware of this feature in VLC. Thanks for the info vijay…CDs/DVDs i lend from my friends are now and then out of sync…

Well, VLC is at far the best and yes i agree with Vijay the audio/video sync is a boon.

Though i m not sure, u guys have tried mplayer, its a command line utility but very effective, though has limitations but still runs every video file in any codec. No comparisions to VLC but still hats off to the developer who developed mplayer

I used a bit older (0.8x) version some time ago. I found Media Player Classic a much better player for _PLAYING_ any type of media. It has much better set of (keyboard) controls than any of a/v players I have seen.

For almost all media files, I use VLC. It is damn good.

One of the best feature is, adjusting the audio/video sync.
This feature is a boon for the movies whose audio is not sync with the video.

    It is simply superb…
